The Selma Police Department is investigating two weekend shootings, including one that resulted in the death of a 19-year-old.
Interim Police Chief John Brock said officers found Jermaine Oliver, 19, slumped over the driver’s seat inside a vehicle on Martin Luther King Street at the J.L. Chestnut Boulevard railroad crossing at about 10:12 p.m. Aug. 22.
Brock said police believe Oliver’s death is connected to reports of gunshots at nearby George Washington Carver Homes minutes before.
Detectives are continuing to gather information and identify potential witnesses, according to a statement from SPD.
Officers are also investigating a shooting that occurred about four hours later that wounded a man in the 1200 block of Alabama Avenue.
Officers were dispatched to the area at about 2 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 23 following a report of multiple shots fired. One individual was wounded in the shooting and was transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center in Selma. SPD did not release the victim’s name or condition.
Officers found evidence that multiple rounds had been discharged and gathered other evidence, according to an SPD statement.
No suspect has been identified at this time.
