King Charles III landed in Rome Wednesday for a state visit to the Vatican, where he will meet Pope Leo XIV and make history as the first British monarch to pray publicly with the pontiff since the Church of England broke away from Catholicism 500 years ago.

King Charles III and Pope Leo XIV will pray together in a "unique" Sistine Chapel service not seen in centuries, Buckingham Palace said Friday, as it announced next week's state visit to the Vatican.

Pope Leo XIV will carry a message of peace to Lebanon and the Christians of the Middle East when he visits next month, Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai told AFP on Wednesday.
