The 161st commemoration celebration for the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation will be held in Safford on Jan. 1 at 11 a.m.
The theme of the 2024 celebration is “AFRICAN AMERICANS and the ARTS.” The keynote speaker will be Dr. Stanford Angion, who is the President of Selma University.
“The Emancipation Proclamation Celebration is an opportunity to remind the community of the importance of the document signed by President Lincoln,” said Althestein Johnson, Emancipation Proclamation Committee Secretary.
“Most importantly, we want to encourage and educate the youth about what this meant to our ancestors and that we should continue to perpetuate this significance to our posterity.”
The Selma-Dallas Emancipation Proclamation Committee is also seeking $100 donations for the scholarship fund to go to Selma University. Anyone who donates $100 or more will have their name listed in the program as one of “Nehemiah’s Builders.”
The celebration will be held at Christian Light Missionary Baptist Church, located at 1863 County Road 107 in Safford.
