Lula Hatcher

Lula Hatcher, matriarch of Lannie's Bar-B-Que

Lannie’s Bar-B-Que in Selma has announced the passing of owner Lula Hatcher.

The family, many of whom live around the restaurant on Minter Avenue in Selma, said in a social media post that Hatcher passed on July 3.

The restaurant will be closed July 6-12 as the family “will be mourning, celebrating her life and supporting each other.”

Lula Hatcher told the Black Belt News Network in 2024 that she was 12 years old when her mother Lannie Travis opened the restaurant 80 years ago. Since then, the restaurant has won many awards and been named to many “must visit” lists.

Here is the family statement:

“Mrs. Lula Hatcher was the heart and soul behind Lannie's BBQ. For years, she built more than a business— she built a tradition rooted in love, hard work, and faith.

Born and raised in Selma, Alabama, Mrs. Hatcher learned early the value of determination and service.

What started as a passion for cooking for family and friends grew into one of Selma's most beloved restaurants. Known for her signature recipes, warm smile, and generous spirit, she treated every customer like family.

She was a leader, a mentor, and a role model to many, always encouraging others to chase their dreams and never give up. Her faith in God, her love for her community, and her dedication to excellence will forever be remembered.

Mrs. Lula Hatcher leaves behind a legacy of flavor, love, compassion, and strength that will continue to inspire generations to come.”

Ashley’s JH Williams Funeral Home is overseeing the funeral. Service arrangements will be released at a later date.
