Disaster Recovery Outreach and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Auxiliary 3016 will host a project to make plastic sleeping mats for veterans in need or the homeless in Selma on Sept. 19.

The event is titled "“Day of Help and Hope”.

"After talking to so many people who are still needing home repairs or permanent housing due to the January 2023 tornado and noticing so many people sleeping on the streets, we wanted to be able to provide a solution to help as many people as possible in a variety of ways on (Sept. 19)," said a statement from Disaster Recovery Outreach.

The statement adds that the project will use plastic grocery bags to be made into mats.

"We want to offer warmth, comfort and care to those most in need in our community," it says.

Volunteers are invited to bring a crochet needle, scissors and clean plastic grocery bags to help cut, sort, flatten, and loop mats to be given out later to those who need them.
