Lurleen B. Wallace Community College received a $2,500 community service grant from Sen. Rob Stewart for the nursing program in Greenville.
A presentation of the grant on Oct. 3 was the result of a lot of strong conversations surrounding healthcare in Alabama, Stewart said, adding there was no grandiose ceremony or big speeches, just an Alabama college and an Alabama Senator who saw the issues coming together to get the job done.
LBW said the grant awarded to the Greenville campus’ nursing program. It also has campuses in Opp and Andalusia. The college said in a statement that the contribution will allow them “to continue making a difference for our students and the communities we serve together.”
Stewart told the Black Belt News Network on the same day that the college released its statement that he got the grant after “identifying needs in my sparsely populated district.” He added there is an importance for community-based investment.
“Access to quality healthcare is a fundamental right, not a privilege,” he said. “By strengthening programs, workforce pipeline, and investing in providers, we are ensuring that families across Alabama – especially in our rural communities – receive the care that they need to live healthier, longer lives.”
