Morgan Academy held its annual Academic Awards Recognition on May 7.
Hope Holladay, daughter of Richard and Whitney Holladay, was announced class valedictorian, and Reagan Barrett, daughter of Juanita W. Barrett and Jeremy Barrett, was named salutatorian for 2023-2024.
Sheryl Schroeder, guidance counselor, announced that to date the class has earned $2,190,828 in scholarship awards and offers.
Morgan Academy graduates will be attending Auburn University, The University of Alabama, Alabama A&M University, the University of Montevallo, Savannah College of Art and Design, Southern Union Community College, Troy University, The University of Southern Mississippi and Wallace Community College Selma, according to Schroeder.
Students with the highest academic average for each grade are Seventh Grade, Maggie Calame; Eighth Grade, Leighton Grace Bennett; Ninth Grade, Ellis Anne McHugh; 10th Grade, Brooke Waters; 11th grade, Gavin Hewston; and 12th Grade, Hope Holladay.
Valedictorian Hope Holladay has a 4.24 GPA and scored a 35 on the ACT. She plans to attend Auburn University and major in biosystems engineering. She loves math and science, and her favorite subject is physics.
Holladay said her favorite teacher is her calculus teacher and mother, Whitney Holladay.
Holladay has been involved in SGA serving in many positions at Morgan Academy and served on the AISA State SGA as chaplain and vice president.
She is a back-to-back tennis state champion and co-captain of the varsity cheerleading squad. She served as the Alabama Girls State Delegate and the Pioneer Electric Youth Tour Delegate. She is a member of the math team, scholars bowl and computer team.
She was a West Alabama Intern for FCA and voted Most Likely to Succeed. She also leads a weekly Bible study for fifth grade girls before school. She volunteers at the food pantry and helped serve meals during the tornado relief effort.
She is a member of Benton Baptist Church, where she assists on the audio-visual team.
Salutatorian Reagan Barrett had a grade point average of 4.24. She plans to attend the University of Southern Mississippi at Gulfpark and major in marine biology.
Barrett plans to go into the research field to work with sharks and rays. Her favorite subject is biology, and she said her favorite teacher is Spanish teacher Mary Cook.
