Teacher Feature: Breunde Moultrie at US Jones Elementary in Demopolis

The Black Belt News Network is proud to launch Teacher Feature, a storytelling series that highlights the extraordinary work of teachers and educators across the Black Belt. Each week, we shine a light on an outstanding educator who has been nominated by their school or community for the difference they make in the lives of students.

If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance your favorite teacher deserves to be recognized. Nominees receive a short questionnaire and are invited to share a photo, giving the community a closer look at the people shaping tomorrow’s leaders.

Our first teacher to spotlight is Breunde Moultrie, a fourth grade math and science teacher at US Jones Elementary in Demopolis City Schools.

Name: Breunde Moultrie

School: US Jones Elementary

Grade or subject you teach: 4th Math and Science

Hometown: Selma, AL

College: Concordia College-Selma (Bachelor's) University of West Alabama (Master's)

What you love about teaching/education: I love that I get the opportunity to spark curiosity and growth. I love to see a student go from confusion to clarity, or from disinterest to engagement. It keeps me learning too, constantly adapting and improving.

Favorite subject to teach: Math

What’s one of your biggest accomplishments so far (personal or professional): One of my biggest accomplishments is successfully balancing my roles as a mother, educator, and Realtor. I’ve been able to raise and support my family, build strong relationships with my students that have led to real academic growth, and serve clients in real estate with honesty, care, and professionalism.

Share a favorite success story of one of your students who made big strides: One of my favorite success stories since joining this school system happened last year. My class scored 84% proficiency on the math ACAP.

I wasn't surprised by the result because these students showed up every single day ready to work. Their attendance was strong, their drive and determination were constant, and the expectations were kept high from day one. They put in the effort, stayed focused, and pushed through challenges together. I was just there to remind them that they were capable of achieving great things and they proved it. I’m so proud of how they performed, but even more proud of the confidence they built throughout the year.

Career aspirations: My career aspiration is to continue building meaningful relationships with students and making a lasting impact, particularly in the Black Belt area where I feel called to serve. No matter what capacity I’m in in the future, I want to support fellow educators. Most importantly, I’m committed to being a lifelong learner to become the best educator I can be for my students.

Have a teacher you admire? We want to hear about them. Nominate an amazing educator in your community by answering the same questions and sending a classroom photo to news@blackbeltnewsnetwork.com. Your submission could help us tell the next inspiring story in the Black Belt.
