Downtown Selma took on a New Orleans vibe Aug. 8 at a Mardi Gras-themed get-out-the-vote event.

The event, sponsored by the Community Engagement Corps of Foot Soldiers Park, featured a float decked out in Mardi Gras colors. About two dozen cars, four-wheelers and golf carts followed the float as it drove through Wards 6, 7 and 8. The parade ended at the Foot Soldiers Park office on Water Street for a street fair.

Candidates Queen Imani, Demonte Purifoy, Lesia James, Erica Day, Kennard Randolph, Cicely Curtis, Dr. Tanya Miles, Christie Thomas, Johnny “Skip” Moss, Trebor Dukes, Collins Pettaway III, Warren “Billy” Young and Ronita Wade attended the event. District Judge Vernetta Perkins Walker also attended.

DJ Double J provided live music and LaToya “The Lemonade Lady” catered the entire event. The float was designed by Deuteronomy McKinley.
