Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr. missed making the runoff for his fourth term by 29 votes in the Aug. 26 election. He announced Wednesday that neither Johnny Moss III nor Aaron Roper will receive his endorsement.

The City of Selma is hosting a Civic Recognition Ceremony to honor Mayor James Perkins Jr. on Wednesday morning.

The event is being held at the Selma Convention Center on Washington Street at 10 a.m.

Organizers are calling it “A Historic Legacy of Service” that will “celebrate Mayor Perkins’ decades of commitment to advancing Selma’s communities, strengthening municipal government, and inspiring progress across generations.”

Perkins did not win reelection as mayor in August. His term ends on Nov. 3 when a new administration takes over.

The public is invited to the event that features keynote speaker Helenor Bell, the first African American female mayor of Hayneville in Lowndes County, who served from 2004-2012. Bell served two terms as president of the Alabama Conference of Black Mayors. She co‐owns and operates with her husband, Bell Funeral Home in Hayneville and Montgomery.
