DeWayne Sanders at election event

DeWayne Sanders was elected Dallas County sheriff on Tuesday.

Dallas County has a new sheriff.

DeWayne Sanders, who has more than two decades of law enforcement experience, was elected Dallas County Sheriff in Tuesday’s General Election.

The win makes Sanders the first Black sheriff in Dallas County.

Sanders won the role with 62% of the votes, beating Scott Swanson who got 22% and Lee A. Green with 15%.

Sanders will replace Sheriff Mike Granthum who is retiring after this term ends in January. Granthum had a health scare last year when he had a heart attack.

In an interview at his watch party Tuesday night, Sanders said he may have made history, but he will work for all of Dallas County and his door will always be open, especially to young people who may need someone to listen to them.

“Don't feel hesitated to call me if you need me for anything. My doors are going to be open for you,” he said.
