Voting advocate with sign on Broad Street

Voting advocates held signs on Broad Street on Tuesday to encourage voters to go to the polls in the primary runoff election.

The primary runoff election on Tuesday night was quiet for the Black Belt as most contested elections won’t be on the ballot until November.

Voter turnout was low, under 10% across the Black Belt News Network’s coverage counties with exception of Dallas County at 11% and Wilcox County at 17%. Wilcox County voters had the Commission District 4 race on the ballot. The winner was Charles Lawson, who defeated Reginald Weatherly Sr. with 62% of the votes.

Marengo County had a 9% turnout, Montgomery County saw 8%, Lowndes County had an 8% result and Perry County recorded a 9% turnout.

In the statewide races, John Wahl, the former chairman of the Alabama Republican Party, won the Republican primary runoff for lieutenant governor Tuesday night, defeating Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen. Wahl will face Democratic nominee Phillip Ensler in the general election in November. Current Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth is term-limited and chose not to run.

Deputy Attorney General Katherine Robertson – a Dallas County native – won the Republican nomination for Alabama Attorney General, defeating Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell after an expensive and often heated race. Robertson will face Democratic nominee Jeffrey McLaughlin, an attorney based in Guntersville and former law partner of current Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, in the fall election.

U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, R-Enterprise, won the Alabama Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, defeating former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson. He will face attorney Everett Wess, who defeated small business owner Dakarai Larriett in the Democratic runoff on Tuesday.

Corey Hill won Tuesday’s Republican primary runoff for Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries, defeating Christina Woerner Mcinnis for the party’s nomination. Hill will face Democratic nominee Ron Sparks, a former agriculture and industries commissioner, in the November election.
