Michael Jackson is district attorney for Dallas County.

Michael Jackson, the former district attorney for the district that includes Dallas County, has announced he is running for mayor of Selma.

“I am running to turn Selma into the next shiny city on the hill,” Jackson said in his announcement.  “Selma can be a place we are all proud of.”

In his announcement, Jackson presented a litany of issues in Selma, including “the lowest quality of education in Alabama” and poorly maintained streets.

“Selma looks horrible,” Jackson said. “Litter and trash are everywhere. Buildings are boarded up, and businesses are constantly closing.”

“Selma was once much larger than Prattville,” he said. “Today, half of Prattville is made up of Selma residents.”

Crime is also an issue, according to Jackson. “The violent criminals and thieves are feasting on Selma,” he said.

“Hope is gone,” he said. “Young people don’t have much to do in the summer. Many parents want the teachers to raise their kids.”

“I want everybody to jump on the train of hope and vote Michael Jackson,” he said.

Jackson was district attorney of the fourth judicial circuit from 2004 until 2022 when he was defeated by Robert H. Turner Jr.

“I have managed million-dollar budgets and millions in grant money,” Jackson said. “I have also been a Municipal Judge for the City of Selma.”

Jackson noted that he was named District Attorney of the Year in Alabama and was president of the District Attorneys Association. He said he prosecuted the State Trooper who killed Jimmie Lee Jackson in 1965, which took place in 2010. He also said he received the profile Courage Award from ADC. He was named the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year for Centre College and was a member of their Board of Trustees.

The municipal election will be Aug. 26.
