Billy Young and Ivy Harrison

Selma City Council President Warren "Billy" Young and City Clerk Ivy Harrison sort through provisional ballots as the city council approves the votes in the Aug. 26 election on Sept. 2. Young lost to Kennard Randolph in his race. Ward 1 City Councilman Troy Harvill, who is facing Charles Bennett in the runoff, is in the background.

The results of the Aug. 26 municipal election in Selma were made official Sept. 2 after city officials reviewed provisional ballots.

The provisional ballots did not change the outcomes of any of the races. Provisional ballots came from voting places at the YMCA, Queen of Peace, Selma High School, Plant Street, Christian Outreach, East End Fire Station and the absentee ballot box, according to City Clerk Ivy Harrison.

In the mayor’s race, eight provisional ballots were approved to be counted, seven from the YMCA and one from the East End Fire Station. Five provisional ballots were approved for James Perkins Jr., the incumbent who did not make the runoff; two were approved for Aaron Roper, who is in the runoff; and one was approved for Temekia Sykes, who did not make the runoff.

After the addition of the provisional ballots, Perkins’ total is 1,167, Roper’s total is 1,193 and Sykes’ total is 250.

Newly elected City Council President Kennard Randolph had four provisional ballots approved, placing his final total at 2,674. Incumbent Warren “Billy” Young also had four provisional votes added to his total, for a final of 1,807.

In Ward 2, Incumbent Christie Thomas received four additional votes for a final of 295 votes. Unsuccessful candidate Trebor Dukes received three additional votes for a final of 153.

In the race for Selma School Board President, Cecely Curtis received two provisional votes for a final of 3,057, and Lebarron Mack had six provisional ballots approved for a final of 1,273.
