Special congressional election in Black Belt districts will be held Tuesday

Black Belt voters will go to the polls Tuesday for special elections in Congressional Districts 2 and 7.

In Congressional District 7, which includes the Black Belt counties west of Lowndes and Butler counties, voters will choose between Ammie Akin and David W. Perry to be the Republican candidate in the November general election. The winner will face Democratic incumbent Terry Sewell.

In District 2, which covers southeast Alabama, including Montgomery and Lowndes counties in the Black Belt News Network coverage area, voters will have six candidates who want to represent the Republican Party in the November general election.

The candidates are Christian Horn, David Matthews, Hampton S. Harris, James Richardson, Joshua McKee and Rhett Marques. The winner will face Democratic incumbent Shomari Figures in November.

“AlabamaVotes.gov remains the best resource for voters preparing to exercise their right to vote in the Aug. 11 Special Primary Election,” Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen said. “Alabamians can verify their congressional district and voter registration status, find their polling location, and review their county’s sample ballot so that they are fully prepared when heading to the polls.”

On Election Day, polls will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters are required to present a valid form of photo identification before voting at their polling place or by absentee ballot, according to Allen. 

Election results will be posted on a door or other visible location at each polling place. Cumulative unofficial election results will be posted on the Alabama Secretary of State’s website at www.AlabamaVotes.gov.

Special primary election will also be held in District 1, which includes Mobile, Baldwin, Escambia and Covington counties.
