Dozens of volunteers show up to help paint new mural downtown

Artist Tres Taylor and wife Helene Taylor are leading volunteers to paint a new mural downtown.

Dozens have turned out the last two days to help paint the new mural being added on the side of GAW Antiques on Water Avenue and Franklin Street this weekend.

Artist Tres Taylor sketched the design and volunteers are filling it in. This mural is called “Coming Together” and features Queen Selma holding magnolias that symbolize dignity.

On Sunday at 6 p.m., organizers will gather for a closing ceremony for the mural and, in honor of the mural’s theme, will walk to the Edmund Pettus Bridge carrying magnolia branches that they will drop into the Alabama River.

Taylor led volunteers in painting a mural on the other side of GAW Antiques in June 2019.
