The 2021 Central Alabama Fair is next week and for the first time, it will be held in the summer.
The festival, which has been held in October for the last 60-plus years, will start Wednesday, July 21 through Sunday, July 25 at Lions Fair Park.
It was moved to July because the carnival ride company used by the Lions Club for 50 years went out of business last year as events slowed down during COVID, organizer John Haskell said.
The new company, Mitchell Brothers out of Louisiana, was booked in 2021 except for July, so the Lions Club took it, he said.
Attendees can expect new rides with a good variety, Haskell said.
For the second year, the fair is being called a festival instead of a fair because there won’t be an agricultural element. Haskell said July is too early for gardeners to have produce ready for judging and it is too hot for animals to travel there.
The fair will feature fair foods like candy apples and Cozy Dawgs, made now by the Selma Rotary Club that took over making the corndogs for Civitan after 60 years.
The fair will be at Lions Fair Park at 2401 West Dallas Ave. from July 21 through July 25. Doors open at 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
