A photograph of downtown Selma decorated for Christmas in the Selma Sun reminded Laura McDowell of her hometown, and she knew that it had to be painted.
“I see something that speaks to me, whether it be a person or a landscape, and I feel compelled to paint it,” said McDowell, a self-taught artist and member of the Selma Art Guild.
McDowell said her painting “Broad Street” was inspired by a photograph in the Selma Sun taken by Publisher Cindy Fisher. McDowell said the photo brought back memories of the lights, decorations and the hustle and bustle of the holidays when she was 8 years old.
