A study by safehome.org found that there was a considerable increase in gun sales throughout the nation and in Alabama as the COVID-19 virus began impacting the globe.Â
The study analyzed 20 years of data and found that the amount of gun sales in Alabama was "record-breaking" with 619,000 firearms sold in 2020, which was the third most per capita of any state in the country.Â
The study also found that 23 million guns were sold nationally, a 60% increase from 2019. Factors in the number of sales include the increase in the manufacture of guns, as well as social unrest in addition to the pandemic.Â
See below for key findings:Â
Alabama ranks in the top 10 for both total and per capita gun sales in 2020.
- 2020 Total Sales: 619,304 (9th)
- 2020 Per Capita Sales: 0.171 (3rd)
- 2000-2020 Total Sales Change: 162% (24th)
- 2000-2020 Per Capita Sales Change: 126% (19th)
