Residents in the Hale County town of Akron are fighting to keep the Post Office open.
A change.org petition says the residents are asking for support to prevent closure of the town's post office on Oct. 31.
"Our post office is an essential service for our community. Residents depend on it to receive mail and packages, send important documents, purchase stamps, and conduct everyday business. Traveling to another town for these services creates an added burden, especially for older adults, people with disabilities, and residents with limited transportation," the petition says.
Residents say they have had inconsistent staffing and access to service over several years.
Rep. Terri Sewell, who represents Hale County, criticized the decision by the U.S. Post Service, calling it "unacceptable" and demanded that it be reopened.Â
"I am demanding that USPS immediately reopen this facility and ensure every absentee ballot is delivered on time," she said. "Akron residents deserve access to their mail, and their right to vote must be protected!"
There does not appear to be an official reason released for why the post office will close.Â
