A legislation to alter the name of Edmund Pettus Bridge to Edmund W. Pettus-Foot Soldiers Bridge has advanced in the Alabama senate after a 23-3 vote.

According to the Associated Press the bill would not change the lettering on the bridge but would allow for a separate sign to be placed in honor of the marchers dubbed Foot Soldiers during the Civil Rights Movement.

The name of the bridge has been the subject of discussion in the public due to it being named after Edmund Pettus, who was a Confederate veteran and was a member of the Ku Klux Klan.

In 2020, a petition was created online to rename the bridge, drawing thousands of signatures. The petition called for it to be renamed after Civil Rights activist John Lewis.

The bill is titled the "Healing History Act" and will be voted on by the Alabama House of Representatives.
