A report from the Alabama Department of Commerce's (ADC) Made in Alabama says that "significant" economic expansion is occurring in the state, which also involves communities the Black Belt region. 

“To ensure that we expand opportunities everywhere, my administration is committed to helping spark revival and growth in the state’s rural communities,” Gov. Kay Ivey said. “While there is much work to be done, we believe we are making progress in this important endeavor.”

The report says that of the communities in rural Alabama the Black Belt is contributing with new industries in the past few years. This includes industries that created jobs in Eufaula in 2023. 

Also contributing is Macon County with Samkee Corp. investing $128 million to build its first U.S. factory in Tuskegee. The Virginia-based Resicum will be opening an aviation training academy at Craig Field in Selma. 

“The conditions for growth are ripe in rural Alabama, and we are committed to ensuring that these communities reap the rewards of new investments and good-paying jobs,” said Ellen McNair, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) are also part of the picture. Communities benefitting from FDI include Selma, Greenville, Luverne and Cussetta. 

Selma, Demopolis, and 15 other cities in the Black Belt are where Meridiam is investing $230 million for faster broadband.
