Several entities in the Black Belt were among others to be part of a $9.3 million funding from Innovate Alabama in an initiative to support local entrepreneurship.

According to Alabama Daily News, there were 51 communities, colleges and nonprofits in the Innovate Alabama Network that benefited from the funding.  

These entities may receive up to $250,000 and can also apply for additional funding. Applications for a second round are currently open and may be done here. 

Black Belt communities that were included in the funding were Marion in Perry County and Pike Road in Montgomery County. 

Nonprofits were Main Street Marion, Montgomery Tech lab, and Higher Education Partnership in Montgomery. 

Colleges were Trenholm State Community College in Montgomery County and Troy University in Pike County.
