Monks associated with the Ancient Sacred Buddhist Scripture Stupas have stopped in Demopolis as part of their Walk For Peace journey and will proceed to Gallion for an overnight rest.

They head to Selma on Friday.

Selma Mayor Johnny Moss III said Selma’s role as a stop along this journey holds special meaning given the city’s legacy as a global symbol of peaceful resistance, reconciliation and moral courage.

“The Walk for Peace aligns deeply with Selma’s history and values,” Moss said. “Our city has long stood at the crossroads of justice, nonviolence, and unity. We are honored to welcome the monks and their message of compassion.”

Selma has several events planned with the monks this week. On Thursday, a donation drop-off will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the George and Jeannie Evans Center, where supplies will be collected in support of the Walk for Peace participants.

On Friday, Dec. 19, the Walk for Peace will arrive in Selma and Dallas County at approximately 10 a.m. with a coordinated police escort. Activities are planned in the Riverfront area, followed by a Community Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. provided by Edmundite Missions.

At 1:30 p.m., a Recognition and Presentation Ceremony will be held at Songs of Selma Park, following a community walk along Water Avenue and over the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

The Walk For Peace has taken the traveling group from Fort Worth in late October and will culminate in Washington D.C. on Feb. 12 according to the website for the project

"We are grateful for the continued support and warm welcome we receive along the way," said a post on a social media page for the group.

They have stopped at the Demopolis Fire Department for lunch until 1 p.m. Afterward they will walk to Bethlehem Church in Gallion. Visiting times are 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

"It was an honor and a blessing to meet and escort the Buddhist Monks this evening while they are on their way to Washington," said a post on social media by the Demopolis Police Department. "Please continue to pray for them along their Walk for Peace journey."

A map of the route shows that they will pass through Montgomery and Auburn before traveling out of state.
