Church Street Methodist Church of Selma has sued the Alabama-West Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church to keep ownership of their church building in downtown Selma.
According to al.com, Church Street Methodist Church filed a lawsuit against the Alabama-West Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church on Oct. 14 in Dallas County Circuit Court to keep control of the building that is the city’s oldest church at 185 years old.
The 350-member congregation says in the suit it never agreed to the “trust clause” that binds the property of congregations to the United Methodist denomination, al.com reports.
