Wouldn’t it be nice to have a place close to the office where you could get away for a little while and decompress?
June 23 was the official ribbon cutting and grand opening of just such a place in downtown Selma. It’s called City Blocks Wellness Center, and it’s next to the Coffee Shoppe in the former Shunnarah law office.
City Blocks Wellness Center is the brainchild of Dr. Rose Irby Wilkins, a wellness advocate at Selma High School. Wilkins said the Center will take a holistic approach to wellness and will be a community wellness hub.
“We will engage with partners in the community already providing services,” Wilkens said. “We want to engage partners like the juvenile court, Cahaba Mental Health and DHR so we can impact social and emotional wellness from a different point of view.”
City Blocks will offer an array of services including couples and family counseling, personal development coaching for youth and adults, bereavement counseling and court-mandated counseling for individuals going through the courts.
Wilkins said City Blocks will host seminars, including one called Cupcakes and Conversations where different focus groups will be brought in like members of the clergy and educators “to find out what is happening in the community in terms of social wellness and mental health.”
The decor is meant to be inviting and relaxing, and anyone is welcome. “There are rocking chairs and water falls. It’s a place where people can come and chill. And a lot of people are doing that, coming to just chill and read a book,” Wilkins said.
A lot of folks may just need some relaxation, and according to Wilkins that too is offered at City Blocks. Three yoga classes will be offered each week. There is also what she calls “stretching the stress” each Wednesday from noon to 12:45 p.m.
“This is primarily for people who work at the downtown area,” Wilkins said. “They can get a salad at the Coffee Shoppe and come over here and do some guided relaxation activities.” She added that there will soon be Tai Chi classes and other special events.
All of the counseling staff are certified, and Wilkins added that there will be a massage therapist for some of the relaxation events.
City Blocks is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. To get information and make an appointment call 334-431-5352 or call Wilkins’ mobile at 470-836-5406.
