The cleanup effort as part of the statewide "Don't Drop It On Alabama" Spring Cleanup effort this month set for today was moved to April 24 due to bad weather.
Various organizations are working to clean up Dallas County as part of the statewide "cleanup effort that is held in April each year.
Alabama’s PALS program, or People Against a Littered State, helps communities organize spring cleanups in April each year with fliers, signup sheets for leaders to use and supplies like trash bags.
Black Belt Benefit Group got Dallas County’s cleanup efforts started on Saturday with a Community Clean Up Day on Lauderdale Street in downtown Selma.
Black Belt Benefit Group Executive Director Devon Gray said they have been organizing the city clean up for a few years.
“We do this in support of all the businesses downtown,” Gray said. “We plan a lot of events to bring people downtown so this is a part of that effort, to spruce things up and have a beautiful place to show off all the good things we have here in Selma.”
Dallas County Commissioner Jan Justice is working with the PALS program and said they have large bags available for anyone wanting to help with the cleanup.
“Let us know if you want some bags and we will bring then to you,” she said.
The next planned cleanup of downtown Selma was rescheduled from Saturday toApril 24 at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church’s back parking lot starting at 9 a.m. due to bad weather.
Justice said the PALS program will be cleaning up all over the county as well as in Selma, but as of now there is no firm schedule of where other cleanups will be. However, she said at the next County Commission meeting on April 12, she hopes a schedule will be worked out.
Alabama People Against A Littered State is a statewide organization formed in 1987 to help make the state more beautiful by sponsoring programs focused on cleaning up litter in Alabama's streets, streams, campuses, and coastlines.
Gray said BBG feels more comfortable having live events this year than last year with COVID. All the information about these events will be on the Facebook page. “This will be our 10th year and we’re glad we will be able to reconnect with our community.”
