The deadline to be counted for the 2020 U.S. census has been extended to Oct. 5, said an announcement from Alabama Counts! and the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA).
U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross made a national announcement for the extension, saying that it would allow more time for people to self-report and census takers to go house to house to record those that haven't responded.
“This extension will give Census Bureau field workers more time to follow up with Alabama households that have not yet responded to the census. Alabamians may also continue self-responding to the census as well,” ADECA director and Alabama Counts! chairman Kenneth Boswell said.
“As the percentage of households that have be counted continues to trek upward, we hope to see additional increases in responses throughout the upcoming week.”
Those who wish to report themselves can do so online at www.my2020census.gov or by phone toll-free 844-330-2020. Mailed in forms can also be given to socially distanced census takers.
In his comments in the announcement Boswell stressed that being counted in the census can affect funding for communities and representation in congress.
“We ask that you take action for generations to come here in Alabama by completing the 2020 Census,” he said. “It takes a matter of minutes to determine the future of our state, and as we now have an extra week, let’s use this time to cement our tally and influence all that depends on this final count.”
