Demopolis Fire Station

The frame house at Demopolis Fire Station No. 1 will be demolished by Eaves Construction to make way for new living quarters and offices.

The days are numbered for a frame house attached to Demopolis Fire Station No. 1.

At their Dec. 18 meeting, the Demopolis City Council accepted a bid of $26,844 from Eaves Construction of Demopolis to take down a structure attached to the fire station to make room for new living quarters and offices. The council rejected an earlier set of bids on Dec. 4 because they varied in price and scope of work.

In other business, the city council told Mayor Woody Collins that they wanted reports from department directors several days before the city council meeting. Collins told the Black Belt News Network that he sent a letter to department directors asking them send their reports in a week before the meeting.

The city council asked Collins to encourage the water board to create a system to notify customers of water cutoffs. City Councilwoman Dawn Hewitt noted that water was recently cut off to some downtown businesses without notice due to a break in a water line. City Councilman Hugh Overmyer said that some cities have notification systems that “put the burden on citizens” to sign up to receive notices.
