The Demopolis City Council is considering measures to limit mobile homes in the city limits and enforce building codes.
At their Aug. 6 meeting, the city council extended a moratorium on mobile homes in the city limits while they consider an ordinance creating an “overlay,” an area where trailers, mobile homes or manufactured homes will not be allowed. A similar moratorium passed by the city council in February expired on Aug. 5.
Demopolis Mayor Woody Collins said he planned to present the overlay ordinance to the council at their next meeting.
Collins said he is also ready for city officials to give property owners deadlines to bring their property into compliance with building codes. He said he would like to start with downtown, then along Highway 80 and then in the “most traveled areas” of the city around schools and churches.
Councilman Charles Jones Jr. said that property owners need more notice of their code violations before they are given a deadline. Collins said he believed property owners “already know” that their property doesn’t meet code. He acknowledged that “people are not going to like being fined for not doing work on their properties.”
Collins asked the council to look over the plans for a vote at the next council meeting.
The city council agreed to donate a lot behind the Rosenbush building to the LLC that is converting the former furniture store into a high-end hotel. Collins told the council that Mrs. Rosenbush donated the property to the city years ago, and the city later sold the lot to Mrs. Hicks, who is now deeding the lot back to the city.
Collins said the LLC will use the lot during the renovation of the Rosenbush building.
The council appointed Demopolis businessman Jim Parr to the board of the Tombigbee Healthcare Authority, which operates Whitfield Regional Hospital.
