Demopolis District 3 City Councilman David McCants (R) tells Mayor Woody Collins (L) that the city hasn't done enough to fix a ditch behind Demopolis High School at the Sept. 4 Demopolis City Council meeting.
An overflowing ditch has put his district “in turmoil,” and District 3 Demopolis City Councilman David McCants said the city isn’t doing enough to fix it.
The issue is a large ditch behind Demopolis High School that McCants said is not draining properly, even though it’s been “cut and bladed.”
“The water has not moved,” McCants said at the Sept. 4 city council meeting. “The water needs to be flowing.” McCants called for a “long-term plan” to fix the ditch.
Demopolis Mayor Woody Collins disagreed. He said water was contained during a recent heavy rainfall, and he said city has done the current city council is the first to get funds from USDA to address the issue, and the city built a road along the ditch so it could be cut. The city has also cleared out beaver dams that led to flooding, Collins said.
“We’ve done more in the last two years than has been done in the last 30 (about fixing the ditch),” Collins said.
McCants responded, “l ain’t seen nothing done.”
“We’ll have to agree to disagree,” Collins replied to McCants.
