A proposed Demopolis subdivision has been voted down by the city’s planning commission.
The Cottage Courts project on the site of the old Mauvilla Trailer Park on Maria Avenue was introduced in June 2025. The planning commission told the contractor at several meetings that they wanted more details about the project.
Planning Commission Chairman Andy Renner said the commission unanimously voted to deny the project at their Dec. 18 meeting “because it was not moving quickly enough.” Renner said the commission also felt that the thirty 800-square-foot homes would not meet the city’s need for housing.
Cottage Courts would have been the city’s first Planned Unit Development, a type of mixed-use project that gives developers more flexibility.
“This was our first PUD, and we needed to do it right,” Renner said.
The developer can bring the proposal back to the commission in a year, or the property owner can present another project for the property, according to Renner.
