The Environmental Protection Agency has launched a civil rights investigation into the Alabama Department of Environmental Management months after a complaint was filed for alleged discrimination.Â
The complaint stated that black residents, especially in the Black Belt region, were being discriminated with funding to address their wastewater infrastructure needs.Â
It was filed by the Center for Rural Enterprise and Environmental Justice and the Natural Resources Defense Council and was represented by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
According to the Alabama Daily News, the soil of the Black Belt has made it difficult to upkeep septic maintenance, causing widespread sanitation issues for residents.Â
ADEM has rejected any claims of discrimination.Â
