A new type of fighter jet was unveiled during a ceremony at Dannelly Field in Montgomery on Friday, Feb. 9.
The Alabama Air National Guard 187th Fighter Wing's F-35 Lightning II was unveiled with multiple officials present, including Gov. Kay Ivey, Rep. Terri Sewell, Mayor Steven Reed, county commission members and others.
The tails of the aircraft was painted red as at tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen, who flew fighter planes with red tails during World War II.
“The red tail you will see is a reminder to all that through excellence we will overcome any obstacle and threat regardless of gender, race or religion, “ said the wing's commander, Col. Brian Vaughn, on social media.
“We are all here for the same mission: to protect our nation, defend our constitution, and to form a more perfect union as the Tuskegee Airmen did.”
