Constance S. Hendricks, former dean of Concordia College school of nursing in Selma, will be among eight individuals honored by UAB school of nursing on Oct. 11.

The former dean of the school of nursing at Concordia College Alabama in Selma is among eight individuals being honored by the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing 75th Diamond Anniversary Gala on Oct. 11.

Constance S. Hendricks, PhD, RN, FAAN (BSN 1974, MSN 1981), is a nurse educator, scholar and advocate whose leadership has shaped nursing education and advanced health equity, and she has broken barriers and built pathways for underrepresented communities in health care, according to a news release from UAB.

Hendricks held a number of positions in nursing education, including dean of the Concordia College Alabama school of nursing. Concordia College, a historically Black college associated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, closed in 2018.

In addition to her role at Concordia College, she held influential academic roles at Tuskegee University, Hampton University, Auburn University, Kentucky State University and the University of South Carolina. Her accolades include the Lillian Holland Harvey Award from the Alabama State Nurses Association, induction as a Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing and the Alabama Nursing Hall of Fame.

In addition to recognizing eight leaders in nursing, the Gala will support future generations of nurses by raising funds for endowed scholarships. The evening will feature a reception, seated dinner and live musical entertainment.
