Four United Methodist churches in the Black Belt are among others set to be officially closed at a meeting of the Alabama-West Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church.

According to AL.com, one of these is the Uniontown United Methodist Church in Perry County, a historic building that was constructed in 1858 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Others in the Black Belt are Wesley Chapel in Choctaw County; Memorial UMC on Broad Street in Selma in Dallas County; and Hills Chapel UMC in Ramer in Montgomery County.

Hills Chapel in Ramer will become the property of the Hills Chapel Cemetery Association. Like the Uniontown church, its history is extensive and was organized in 1857.

A reason for closing the churches is said to be declining attendance and memberships.
