Free Wi-Fi access could be coming to downtown this summer courtesy of the city.
The city of Selma’s information director John Kinnerson Jr. said the city plans to use its own municipal fiber network to make Wi-Fi available downtown for visitors. The city is about 14 square miles, but the city’s fiber network only covers about half of that, he said. Still, the service could be made available to folks who are visiting the city’s most popular sites.
Twelve miles of fiberoptic cable connect 11 city-owned buildings, according to Kinnerson. The network, originally installed in Mayor James Perkins Jr.’s first term, reaches out to Bloch Park to the west, to the curb market across the Alabama River, to Highland Avenue to the north and to the County Jail on Sheffield Road to the east.
