Friends of the Alabama River came to Selma recently to make some new friends.
Kathleen Kirkpatrick said Friends of the Alabama River is a new organization that wants to protect the Alabama River.
“We advocate for our beautiful Alabama watershed,” Kirkpatrick said. “It’s such a critical part of our economy in this region. And, we’ve all got to drink water, right?”
Kirkpatrick gathered names and emails for the organization. “We are based in Montgomery and call the river’s banks our home,” according to the organization’s new website. “We meet monthly, alternating between green drinks and field trips to learn about the Alabama River Watershed.”
The newly formed organization is joining with advocacy groups/organizations and governmental strategies that are already there to protect the river, according to Kirkpatrick.
The Alabama River runs through 23,000 square miles of Alabama and is considered a main artery of commerce and recreation. The top threats to the watershed are “failing wastewater sanitation, sanitary sewer overflows, sedimentation and erosion, agricultural runoff, and industrial pollution,” according to Kirkpatrick.
