Former Chief Deputy Roy Fikes has been appointed Sheriff of Perry County by Gov. Kay Ivey.
The appointment was announced April 3. Fikes will replace retiring Sheriff Billy Jones.
Fikes is a Perry County native and served 30 years in law enforcement, including 22 years as deputy sheriff in the Perry County Sheriff’s Office as well as a campus security officer for Marion Military Institute.
“Sheriff Roy Fikes is not only a veteran law enforcement officer of three decades, but he knows well the people of Perry County and the needs of their communities,”Ivey said in a statement.“He will hit the ground running to ensure the public is protected and the law will be enforced fairly and equally.”
“This is more than just a title – it is a responsibility I take to heart,” he said in a statement.“I am committed to restoring trust, ensuring transparency, and workinghand-in-handwith our community to create a safer, stronger Perry County. My focus is on accountability, service and making sure every resident knows that their sheriff’s office is here to serve them with integrity and respect.”
Perry County CommissionChairmanAlbert Turner Jr said three individuals were considered for the position: James Hood, Susan Smith, and Roy Fikes.
Turner said in a social media post that “he has no reservations about the appointment,” adding he and Fikes are “well-acquainted.”
“I look forward to working together to make Perry County an even safer place to live and work,” Turner said.
Turner thanked acting Sheriff Quentin Jones for his work as interim sheriff. Fikes will finish out the term of the retiring Billy Jones and will be eligible to run for the position in the 2026 election.
