A state audit reports that the Greene County Sheriff's Office owes $4.9 million after reportedly finding inadequate documentation of payments to county employees from the Bingo Fund.

According to WBRC.com, the audit specifically said that there was inadequate or no documentation for the payment of $3,159,031 to employees from the fund.

In addition to employees there was also inadequate documentation for $2,161,552 paid to vendors. Of that amount $1,179,252 was paid to consultants and attorneys, with the rest payments to merchants, individuals, restaurants, hotels, automotive repair shops, gas stations and grocery stores, the audit reportedly said.

There were also supposedly flaws with bookkeeping that included not making deposits on time and not keeping records of fees for pistol permits.

Attorney General Steve Marshall will take over collecting the owed amount. The Greene County Sheriff's office is headed by Jonathan Benison.
