George Washington Carver Homes has a new mayor, and she is taking her job very seriously.
Johnny Moss III was elected as the mayor of Selma on Sept. 23, but Latalia Rivers was elected by her neighborhood at GWC Homes as their “mayor” in mock elections sponsored by the Civic Engagement Corps of Foot Soldiers Park that encourages the community to get involved and lead efforts of improvement.
Other neighbors were elected to positions, including members of the GWC School Board and the GWC City Council.
“They hit the ground running,” said Frances Cleveland, the CEC manager. “We are very proud of them.”
Rivers said, “I take my job seriously, because voting and serving the people is a serious matter.”
Mayor Rivers recently met with Selma’s Mayor-Elect Johnny Moss III.
“I wanted to know what’s inside his head. So I asked him,” Rivers said. “He seems real cool and genuine to me, so I support him fully. I will be on the front row at his swearing-in.”
Mayor-Elect Moss said of Rivers, “She is tough. And bossy. I appreciate her keeping me on my toes. I look forward to working with her and her team.”
The newly elected officials of GWC have continued their professional development training by attending three sessions at Foot Soldiers Park and an actual Selma City Council meeting.
Rivers said GWC’s elected officials will seek out other organizations so that they can continue to work together.
“We welcome all the help we can get,” said Santana Thomas, elected to the GWC School Board. “Our next planning session will be with two more organizations. Stay tuned for our progress.”
