The Hayneville City Council has voted to temporarily disband the police department until Oct. 15 during a special called meeting.

According to WSFA, the action follows a series of tensions Police Chief Kelvin Mitchell and a Lowndes County Judge over the handling of a case against Sheriff Christopher West.

Several officers in the police department have been placed on paid leave until the disbandment is up in October.

In the absence of the police department the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office will answer calls.
