A heat advisory is in effect for several Black Belt counties and surrounding areas until 9 p.m. tonight.

Bibb, Dallas, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Marengo, Marion, Perry, Pickens, Sumter, and Tuscaloosa counties are all under the advisory.

High temperatures and humidity have the potential to cause heat illnesses.

During this time the Dallas County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) advises drinking fluids, staying in air-conditioned rooms, staying out of the sun, and checking with relatives and neighbors.

"Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening," EMA adds. "Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water."
