Historic Tour of Homes

The Junior Hostesses greeted guests at Sturdivant Hall Friday and at various tour properties throughout Saturday.

The Selma-Dallas County Historic Preservation Society hosted the 48th Annual Historic Selma Tour of Homes this past weekend. The event, which is a fundraiser for the society, was enjoyed by people from Selma and some people from out of town.

The event kicked off on Friday evening with a presentation at Sturdivant Hall by Susan A. Besser, an interior designer and preservationist from the O'More School of Design at Belmont University in Tennessee. She has over 20 years of research experience dedicated to Selma's architectural heritage. Her talk was entitled, "The Architects Who Shaped Selma."

Her upcoming book, “The Architecture of Selma – The Forgotten City,” explores Selma’s architectural history from its founding to present.

The event's success wouldn't have been possible without the dedication of many volunteers, especially the Junior Hostesses. These young ladies greeted guests at Sturdivant Hall on Friday and were stationed at various tour properties throughout Saturday, welcoming visitors to Selma.

SDCHPS Treasurer Candi Duncan said that this year’s ticket sales were a little lower than most years. She attributes the lower attendance to a number of road bumps, namely a change in the date. The tour this year was the second weekend in March but is usually the third weekend in March.

Duncan also said the massive amount of work to clean up and repair many of the homes after last year’s tornado meant that advertising the event was late. And this year, the weather the weekend of the event started off wet and rainy. She added that many of the properties owned by the SDCHPS were damaged in the tornado and they are still being repaired.

However, the tour attracted guests from Selma and surrounding counties, along with visitors venturing from as far away as Atlanta. And although the exact count is not available right now, Duncan said the tour did make money for the SDCHPS.

The SDCHPS is collecting visitor feedback atHistoricSelma.org about the 48th Annual Historic Selma Tour of Homes.
