Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded grants totaling $8,875 Selma and Blackbelt Regional Abuse Sanctuary serving Dallas, Perry and Wilcox counties.

“Victims of domestic violence need a place where they can seek refuge and comfort from abusive relationships,” Ivey said in an announcement. “The Selma and Blackbelt Regional Abuse Sanctuary is that place of refuge in Dallas, Perry, and Wilcox counties. I appreciate the organization’s willingness to guide victims at a time when the next steps in their lives can often be uncertain.”

The announcement stated that the sanctuary was established in 1991 as a collaboration of the Salvation Army and the District Attorney’s Office before becoming independent in 1994.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) administered the funds through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in support of the mission and programs of the Selma and Blackbelt Regional Abuse Sanctuary,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.
