James Graboys named permanent chief of Montgomery Police Department

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed has announced that Interim Police Chief James Graboys has been named the permanent head of the Montgomery Police Department. 

"Chief Graboys has shown outstanding leadership during his tenure and I'm confident that he will continue to lead the Montgomery Police Department with integrity, vision and a steadfast commitment to our public safety," Reed said. 

Graboys was named interim police chief on June 25 following the resignation of Daryl Albert when he was accused of discriminating against a female police officer. 

In his announcement, Reed added that public safety would be a "top priority" for the city heading into 2025, saying that there have been fewer homicides in 2024 than the previous year. 

"We're grateful for our faith leaders, our grassroots leaders, our schools, our parents, our family members, our friends, so many others who emphasize conflict resolution and de-escalation tactics," said Reed. 

However, despite the apparent drop in homicides Reed said that there was a "slight uptick" in property crimes, causing concern that he stated that he has shared with Graboys. 

He stressed that by "working together collectively" the number can eventually be brought down.
