A man has been sentenced for the homicide of a 16-year-old who was a student of Carver High School in Montgomery before he was killed in 2019.
A statement from Montgomery County District Attorney Azzie Oliver announced that Lavonte Frazier was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the shooting of Jaylan Saunders.
It describes the incident, which took place on Jan. 29, 2019, at 1100 block of Hill Street where the residence was struck "multiple times" by gunfire. Jaylan Saunders was found deceased in his bed of a gunshot wound.
Investigators learned that he was not the intended target of the shooting. The individual who was had left the house prior.
The shooting became a cold case. The Montgomery County Cold Case Unit eventually traced a gun found at a traffic stop in Prattville to Frazier, proving to the be the breakthrough that was needed according to the statement.
“This case is a heartbreaking reminder of how senseless violence can take a young life and change a family forever," said Oliver. "Jaylan was only 16 years old. He had his whole life ahead of him, and that future was violently taken away from him and his family."
"While nothing can bring him back, solving this cold case can help his loved ones find a path forward. I am also grateful that the person responsible is now off the streets and will be held accountable for what he did.”
