Jemison High School was understandably happy about the state-of-the-art electronic display scoreboard they unveiled at their first home game on Sept. 4.
They were less happy with the score that was displayed on the board at the end of the game: Demopolis High School Tigers 35, Jemison High School Panthers 21.
As the score indicates, it was an exciting offensive game. Both sides had trouble completing tackles in what was primarily a ground game. And both sides, but especially the Tigers, stalled their own drives and gifted their opponents on offense with ill-timed stand-groaning penalties.
Whit Goodwin was a steady hand behind center and scored two touchdowns on quarterback keepers. Aidan Burns pounded the ball up the middle throughout the game.
Tigers kicker Matthew Thomasson made all seven extra points, a feat a fan can’t assume in high school football.
Demopolis led throughout the game. But the Panthers scored touchdowns in each of the last three quarters, putting them only a touchdown behind the Tigers in the fourth quarter. Then Tigers running back Aiden Brown broke the Panthers’ back with a brilliant run into the endzone with about a minute and a half left in the game.
Demopolis (1-1) faces Northside High School at home Thursday in the AHSAA TV game of the week.
