MONTGOMERY – The Montgomery County Commission may join the city of Montgomery in constructing a new health facility for city and county employees.
Premise Health of Alabama is a medical contractor that provides health services to city and county employees. The county commission owns the current facility on Hull Street, but the building needs “heavy” repairs, County Administrator Kindell Anderson told the county commission at their June 24 meeting.
According to a memorandum of understanding being considered by the county commission, the city will set aside a parcel of land they own and hire an architect to design a new building to house Premise Health. Anderson said the new building would add new doctors and a drive-thru pharmacy.
The city and county will each pay half of the cost of the $5.5 million project. The city would be responsible for “major” upkeep while the county would handle more minor maintenance.
The building would be located at the Paterson Field parking lot, Anderson said, and the city would lead its construction.
Commissioner Justin Castanza asked why the city and county didn’t consider renovating one of the many empty office buildings or schools in Montgomery.
Anderson said that several office buildings were considered, but the workspace or the parking would not work for the new clinic. He said designing a new building will better meet the needs of patients, especially with cutting down on waiting times.
“(Designing a new building) will allow us to have everything exactly the way it needs to be,” Anderson told Castanza.
The terms of the MOU are being negotiated and will be considered at a future meeting.
The Montgomery County Commission meets on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 101 South Lawrence Street. Information sessions begin at 10 a.m. followed by the formal meeting.
