Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey is warning the public of a "smishing" scam that tries to solicit personal and banking information.
The term is a combination of "SMS" and "phishing". Bailey said that these are often sent during the holidays when packages are being shipped out.
He cited a finding by the Better Business Bureau in which there's been an increase of such scams asking recipients to “update delivery preferences,” or “schedule a re-delivery.”
"Many times, these package scams require victims to pay a bogus shipping fee," he said. "In addition to stealing your personal information, clicking on the links in these texts can initiate a malware download onto your mobile device."
Anyone who receives a text like this and has concerns is advised to go to their post office and contact the shipper directly.
